The Origin of the Chocolate Chip

It’s amazing how the smallest, most common morsels we use/consume often go unnoticed and aren’t thought about much. In celebration of National Chocolate Chip Day May 15, we are taking you back to 1937 when the first chocolate chip was created with the invention of chocolate chip cookies. The name Ruth Graves Wakefield might not mean much to you, but rest assured this woman has warmed your heart and been the source of your gratitude many times over the years. A resident of Whitman, Massachusetts at the Toll House Inn, Ruth crafted the first chocolate chip cookie when she cut up a Nestlé chocolate bar and added it to her cookies. Her recipe was such a hit that she and Nestlé reached an agreement to place her recipe on the company’s packaging.

And here we are, over 80 years later, still developing innovative ways to incorporate chocolate chips into sweet treats and other recipes. Some of our claim-to-fame chocolate chip treats are below. How will you choose to celebrate and appreciate National Chocolate Chip Day May 15?
